Mujeeb is a versatile bowler who can deliver traditional offspin as well as mix it up with legspin and deceptive googlies, making him a “complete package” according to Afghanistan coach Andy Moles. Despite being just 16 years old, Mujeeb aspires to follow in the footsteps of his senior teammate Rashid Khan, who is two years older. The young cricketer has generated considerable hype and expectations, fueled by his impressive performances.

Mujeeb gained recognition while representing the Afghanistan Under-19 team, which convincingly defeated Bangladesh 3-1 on their home soil. He primarily bowled with the new ball and made an impact by picking up eight wickets in the first three games of the series. 

However, he reached new heights in a nine-over spell, where he claimed exceptional figures of 7 for 19. These bowling figures are the joint second-best in all Youth One Day Internationals. Mujeeb’s remarkable performance played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s defense of a modest total of 133 runs. Throughout the series, he took a total of 17 wickets, the highest by any bowler in a bilateral Youth ODI series.

His impressive performances in matches against his own country caught the attention of the Comilla Victorians, who recruited him as a replacement player for the 2017-18 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.

Mujeeb continued to enhance his reputation on the global stage, playing a significant role in Afghanistan’s historic victory at the Under-19 Asia Cup. He played a pivotal role in the final against Pakistan, where he took a five-wicket haul. Prior to that, he claimed six wickets in the semi-final match against Nepal. Overall, Mujeeb finished the tournament with an impressive tally of 20 wickets in five games.

In the Under-19 World Cup, Mujeeb’s brilliant four-wicket haul helped Afghanistan secure a semi-final spot by defeating New Zealand. Just two days later, he was signed by the Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 auction for a staggering INR 4 crore (approximately 630,000 USD).
