His skills were recognized at the domestic level as well. Mendis was included in Colombo’s squads for various tournaments, including the Super Four Provincial Tournament, the Super Provincial One Day Tournament, and the 2018 SLC T20 League. He made his Twenty20 debut for Colombo in August 2018.

In November 2018, Mendis made his first-class debut for the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in the Premier League Tournament. He continued to excel in domestic cricket, featuring in Colombo’s squad for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament and emerging as the leading wicket-taker in the 2019-20 Invitation Limited Over Tournament.

His talent was sought after in franchise leagues, and in October 2020, he was drafted by the Kandy Tuskers for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League. Mendis was named the vice-captain of the SLC Greens team for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League and later selected to play for the Kandy Warriors in the 2021 Lanka Premier League. In July 2022, he signed with the Kandy Falcons for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League.
